A 54-year-old Thai English teacher from Bangkok won the World's
Loudest, Longest, Funniest Laugh Contest on Saturday (July 5) held at Ripley's
World of Entertainment in Pattaya, Thailand.
Jitrat Wongsomboon was able to outclass her rivals with
a laugh of 12 minutes and 26 seconds.
A total of 136 applicants, both foreign and Thai laughers, signed up to
compete but only 26 qualified with 12 different nationalities having to go
through the preliminary auditions.
The criteria for winning the championship is simply to have the
loudest, longest, and funniest laugh, in addition the most outstanding
national costume worn by participants to display their culture can be a
winning factor.
Jitrat, this year's winner, not only was able to laugh for more than 12
minutes, but was able to laugh at a level of 110 decibels which won her the
first prize of 3,100 U.S. dollars along with a gold plated certificate and a
Ripley's privilege gold card.
She will also be able to tour the world to show her laughing skills in
35 other branches of the Ripley's entertainment centre.
"I had in my mind that I should communicate happiness to everyone
and I also wanted everyone to be happy," Jitrat Wongsomboon told Reuters
after receiving her prize.
The first runner up received a prize of 300 U.S. dollars.
In addition, participants as well as the audience members were asked to
wear traditional costumes from their country for the chance of winning 160
U.S. dollars.
The competition attracted participants from many countries including
Liberia, England, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Holland, France, as well as
Thailand.
The oldest contestant was a 66 year old woman who won the competition
10 years ago and the youngest one was a nine year old girl from Thailand.
The general manager of Ripley's Pattaya said the event was organised to
help people release their stress with laughter during uncertain times brought
on by economic problems.
